It is just me?

I was just looking up the town 'Celebration' in Florida* in Wikipedia and came up with a variety of statistics.
It included the following information:

There were 952 households out of which 45.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.5% were married couples living together, 6.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.7% were non-families. 20.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 3.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.82 and the average family size was 3.30.

"Uh-huh", you might say.
So?

Well, let me ask you this.
Where is the information that tells us how many men are the householders with no wife present??
Is it so bizarre that a woman might own her own home that it needs to be a stand-out statistic?

BAH!

(Yeah, it's probably just me.)

*I just do these things. I don't know why.

Hi Tai

"Yeah, I think it's just you"...:)

All these new "freedoms to be ourselves" have really only happened in the last 50 years. Women now carry M-16's in war zones, and men can be "Mr. Moms" (though there still will be comments like "Get a Job, you Bum!). You can be anything you want to be in this generation, but people are still getting used to a lot of these "new Ideas". There are still some things we need to clean out of the system yet (sorry, we'll try to clean it up faster....wait cleaning...isn't that...nah, nevermind)

I'm wondering about the "non-families" myself.

I read the rest of the article thinking "Okay, where are the families with no men?" It's not just you. And, like Cracker Lilo, I'm curious about "non-families" as well.

I think the reason is because the percentage is so small with the men, that they don't register significantly. Woman are still the household makers, single or not. I don't know many single men that live in a "household" environment.... do you? Bachelor pad, rental situation maybe.

Oh, I so get why this irked you.

WHEN I WAS RAISING MY THREE KIDS WITHOUT A WOMAN , AFTER BEING WIDOWED AT YOUNG AGE.[THIS WAS IN THE 60'S] ..PEOPLE FELT SORRY FOR ME DECIDING TO BE TO BE A BOTH MOM AND DAD ..THEY DIDNT REALIZE BEING HANDS ON WITH MY CHILDREN KEPT ME SANE AND CONNECTED TO THEM AND LIFE'S POSSABILITIES .. I WENT TO WORK AND HAD A DAYTIME CARE GIVER, BUT CAME HOME TO DIAPER ,FEED AND PUT TO BED ETC .... 40 YEARS LATER ,THIS ISNT VIEWED AS CRAZY AND MEN CAN DO THIS AND GET SUPPORT FROM OTHER MEN.. STILL A MINORITY..BUT CHANGE IS HAPPENING I THINK

I hear yous on that. What an annoying statistic. I wonder if anyone carrying out the research ever thought the way you did?

Not sure if you got my email from the other day or not, but I've just nominated you for my May's Perfect Post award. They haven't updated the links just yet (link to it through my blog, if you're interested), but they're very good at getting on it so it shouldn't be long. Thanks for posting such great stuff!

Maybe it's for the single women's benefit. It might draw more single men to Celebration!

On the other hand, considering how badly women are often paid compared to men, for doing the same jobs, maybe it is noteworthy in the sense that they are still able to keep a household together with minuscule incomes. Just a thought.

Good point!!!

This reminds me of my senior project in college. I developed a support group for single Dads - our town was so backward that low income Mothers could get food stamps or food vouchers, but a low income single Dad could NOT - just by virtue of their gender...can you believe it!

Wikipedia should be renamed WICKEDpedia. It does indeed have some wicked facts. But what you didn't know is that it spits out different information for Canadian citizens than it does for us Yankees. See, we have all those stats you are wondering about at our little fingertips. Come down to the good old USA and you can see what I am talking about. By the way, thanks for visiting my blog and congrats on your nomination. It is definitely well deserved! :)
