2 + 2 = ?

I placed my lunch order.

"That's $10.00, please."

I handed her a twenty.

She paused.

Opened the till.

Pulled out a calculator (!).

Discreetly tapped in the (complicated!?) sums.

Consulted with the other staff member.

"So you give her $10 dollars back." The reply came.

Hesitatingly she handed me a ten and looked at me quickly to ensure she hadn't made an error.

Is it just me? Was that not bizarre?
I swear, I'm getting less and less patient with things like that.
It was all I could do not to cock an eyebrow at her and inquire how grade two was working out.

Next time assure her she owes you a hundred in return. Or be nice and offer to reach into the till and just take what you feel you are owed.

Reminds me of a local Taco Bell worker. If you ordered one item, you were generally okay. If two, it confused her to the point where she needed management intervention to sort out the issue. I'm not exaggerating here. I began to wonder if she was retarded or just very stupid. Because the rules say I'm supposed to pity and help the retarded, but I can hate stupid people.

One does wonder on occasion if schooling helps these days. The only other explanation is she could have been new and stressed out to the point she couldn't even do a simple math problem - or she could have been plain stupid LOL

That's not only bizarre, it's downright scary.

WOW..may be she got stage fright?
I feel the same way. I just can't suffer fools gladly anymore!

She's providing the invaluable service of making me feel better about my own math skills.

I think she was just angling for a tip...pretending stupidity until you just told her to "keep it!"

I have to think that.

Or else I need to leave this life and go live in a cave, where at least the lizards can count.

Shaking my head. Janice has a very kind explanation. Are you so intimidating Tai?

You were probably right not to comment. Thee is always the outside chance she might have been a participant in a work placement program for exceptional people. Perhaps she has no ability to cope with numeracy but is a savant with music or with visual/tactile tasks. Or maybe she's a model.

Hmmmm. I don't know what expression to use. Here it is called: "The dumbing down of America." But I've never heard of anything like this in Canada. Maybe she was from the States?

Wow. Math stresses me out but it was $10 and $20 EVEN!

I usually tell the clerk what the change will be as I hand over the cash... keeps me alert!
That clerk you met.... Honestly that takes the cake for dumb-ass math skills! Poor you for having to witness it!

I'm completely math stupid, I mean completely but that's a problem even I can handle.

Please; no one understands Canadien money.

When my friends and I drove through Canada we would just hand over brightly colored bills and some odd looking coins and tell the cashier to figure it out.

Probably paid $237 for a Twinkie.

Are you serious? Please tell me you're not serious. I don't want it to be true.

Maybe it was an elaborate joke that all the employees were in on. At least let's hope so, for the sake of humanity.

I'm thinking that if you can't subtract 10 from 20, a career in retail probably isn't your calling...
