That information is helpful (sort of) but there is one thing that it DOESN'T explain.
Why the HELL does everyone think it's so damn funny??
All day long people were laughing and whispering at me; pointing at their throats and silently ridiculing me and my sore throat.
The other intriguing reaction? Some would start speaking softly to me in broken sentences as if I was some kind of foreign deaf person who suddenly couldn't understand regularly spoken English.
Oh.
And some of them even threw in some sign language for good measure.
So what is it about laryngitis that turns everyone else into annoying mockers?

It's not laryngitis that causes people to act that way...it's ignorance.
Well. I'm not sure it's funny, but this post made me laugh. Why DO people turn into neanderthals to communicate with someone with laryngitis? I can't recall doing that, but I'm sure I've teased my son when he had laryngitis.
I have no explanation.

There was a good documentary on the Knowledge Network the other night about things that make people laugh. Often people laugh when they're uncomfortable and don't know how else to react. It was really interesting. Humour definitely has a dark side.
I think laryngitis is funny (sorry). I also think hiccups and sneezes are cute.
Maybe it's because bodies normally work so perfectly that it's confusing and and funny when they do something out of the ordinary.

hi tai nice to see you again after so long...yes, i keep trying to follow my bliss, but sometimes i lose track of it, HAH HAH HAH HAH....oh well
maybe people are afraid of the SILENCE!??? i remember after i came back from a consciousness raising workshop in Denver i decided to observe "a day of silence" - so, with instructions from my "guru" i pinned a little note on my shirt, which stated" "In Silence"...it was a really very interesting experience. YES, i WAS mocked by some, and the "control freaks" (two of them) both tried everything they could to get to me speak. i was living in Chilliwack at the time, and i observed that the only people who did not "react" adversely were the first nations people, they just looked at me and smiled....so, it is a very interesting topic you bring up here.

Enjoy the vacation. The time I had the full MUTE version of laryngitis it was torture at first and then a big relief to not feel like I had to respond verbally to anything.
I'm sure I have said it before, but the folks you work with seem bloody ignorant!
PS: how do you answer the phone?
I sometimes wish that countries at war with each other could have laryngitis each for one day. Thus each side would be forced to listen to the other side without being able to interupt because of their lack of voice. I think by doing so, they'd realize they want the same thing for their countries which would be security for their people.
But then I realize they'd try to scream anyways though they'd only sound like screeching chickens.

Most people see it as a 'you aren't really hurt' kind of situation, so the poke fun... why they act wierd otherwise - who knows?
Heh, you probably already know this but I get laryngitis at the drop of a hat, maybe once every month or so.
And working with kids it's tricky at first getting them to listen to you. I have developed an amazing stage whisper which I can project across the room. The children don't even comment anymore when I lose my voice.
My sympathies to you, dearie. The kids are far less annoying to deal with than some of the grown-ups.
