About 7 years ago I went to see if I could have laser eye surgery to once and for all have my eyes corrected.
"Your cornea is too thin. Wait a few years, the technology is always improving."
So it was with bated breath that I went to my preliminary exam for laser surgery last week. "Your cornea's too thin. Your prescription is too high. Wait a few years. The...."
Yeah yeah yeah. Heard it before.
Oh, and Doctor? Your technology is no match for how fast my eyes are deteriorating.
So. That's it. I'm not going to bother again. After the eye doctor suggested I apply to have lens replacement surgery I walked out thinking, "Nah. I'll just have to be sexy in my specs. I think I can do that."
But I'd be lying if I told you I was wasn't terribly disappointed. Because I was. I just wanted a chance. An option. An opportunity to have this magical treatment that would allow me to see.
And when I finally stumbled outside into the light, I must admit, I wept inwardly for a moment at not having the choice.
And then I had to feel my way into a store to have the shopkeeper dial whatshisface's number to come pick me up.
Those dilating eye drops are murder.

Sexy isn't even the word to describe you in your glasses... you're bewitching... and you leave me bewitched, bothered and bewildered :) You're amazing!!
I rather like folks who wear glasses—and not just because I do.
I’m so glad you didn’t step in front of a car with those dilated eyes.
I'm sad to hear you were disappointed, but you don't have to worry about your looks, my dear -- to echo anonymous, you are drop-dead, library-sexy, smart-girl gorgeous in both contacts and glasses. Oooh la la!
I'm sorry you are disappointed about this Tai. It would have been great for you.
My daughter is like you, worn glasses since she was 6 or 7 and longed to get contacts as a teenager which she could not have since they would not correct her vision adequately. Finally she was allowed but only wore them for a few years and decided that better vision with glasses was more desirable than vanity. I don't think she has ever explored laser surgery.
Lens replacement actually is an option you might consider in a few years. They have three types of artificial lens, one for far distance (which I just had done due to cataracts)another to correct astigmatism as well as distance vision and one to give both short and long vision. These were expensive at $1600 per lens.
The procedure itself is not at all bad. The worst part is the drops you have to use four times a day for a month. Look into it thoroughly before you write it off Tai.
I read recently that there are problems with some laser eye surgery. I happen to think many women look better in glasses. I know a lot of men who agree with me.
If you get breast implants, men won't mind if you grope around blindly and bump into them frequently. Or if you get the Asian treatment (jaundice for the skin, dye for the hair, tighten the eyes) I'll be your seeing-eye human.
I think you look marvelous with or without your glasses and while looks may seem important it's who you are that really counts - and what I see is is a truly wonderful person.
I've been wearing them since I was five or six. And I've never even looked into contacts, much less eye surgery. Ican't help but think, what if something goes wrong and I see even less than I do now.
Besides, specs just add... mystery. So there.
it always sucks to find out you don't have a choice but on the plus side glasses are sexy.
My mum had lens replacement surgery a year or so ago. It has helped her immeasurable. I'd say look into it further, at your leisure. However, I do know you, darling, and know you look fantastic regardless of needing glasses to bring the world into focus.
And that's coming from another bespectacled freak!
I'm sorry:(
I too,like women in glasses.
Us four eyes are lucky to have that extra accessory to add to our wardrobes too!
I know exactly how you felt. I went to the hand doctor thinking I had some sort of tendonitis and a surgery would fix it. I was so blue after finding out it was osteoarthritis and nothing could fix it. We will have fun and console each other in 13 days and it will all be alright.
It's not so much the glasses I find distracting, it's that sword you have on top of your head.
I find a lot of people more attractive with glasses (though I'd never say all...sorry, but some glasses just don't go good with some faces).
Appearance aside, I've considered laser surgery myself, but I usually decide that if there is ANY risk of messing up my eyes even more, it doesn't outweigh the minor inconvenience of glasses.
Hey Tai don't worry about it, one way or the other, when you get to a certain age you'll have to wear them, laser surgery or no... I used to be able to function without specs, but now my arms are getting too short and I can't read the fine print on the menu. Hell everything is pretty much fine print now!!! ;o(
Of course you were sad. Not having an option is tough. Still, I am sorry you were made sad. BOO on them and their-can't-handle-thin-cornea technology.
I've worn glasses since I was nine, and can't imagine myself without them. It sucks not to have the choice, though.
That you would even think you could get more attractive without glasses--craziness, woman!
I've resigned myself to glasses forever - I get hysterical when I can't find them. I know how it feels to be told there is nothing to be done - but hey, at least we can still see!
My husband was a little disappointed that I decided to wear contact lenses. In my glasses, he -knew- that if I took them off, I was going to get very, very (very) close to him...

Good photo to put with that one... of course a photo with YOU in specs would have been just as pretty. I am sad that you don't get to choose. But if I remember rightly, you weren't really sure if you wanted to risk it anyways, so now you don't have to worry about them chopping into your lovely, rich coloured eyes!
I think glasses on girls are very sexy, and thanks for one of my favorite Marilyn photos.
i hear ya. i can't have the eye surgery either because i have RP and no amount of surgery will fix that. on top of that, i too have to wear glasses. my sympathy..i know how it sux.
